Editorial Design
An editorial exploration of the thin line between dreams and memories.
Like many, I’ve noticed how some memories feel almost dreamlike. Hazy, surreal, and difficult to give justice to with words. I wanted to explore that overlap visually. I dug through years of iPhone photos and curated seemingly mundane images that held personal weight because of the memories attached to them. Then I used Midjourney’s /blend command to generate dreamlike mixtures of my memories. The result was images that felt familiar but just a bit off, like a distant memory.
Everything was compiled into a 14-page booklet, pairing the original and AI-generated images with excerpts from philosophers, poets, and authors who wrote about the overlap of dreams and memory. The title is a nod to both the AI process and the uncanny feeling memories can take on when they blend with dreams. I was hesitant about using AI at first. It’s something that scares me as a designer, but I think it’s crucial to engage with these tools and not avoid them. For this project, it turned out to be the perfect tool for the uncanny effect I was after.
